The city of León, with more than two thousand years of history, is one of Spain’s great centres of religious heritage. Its old town is dotted with churches, convents and monasteries that stand out not only for their architectural value, but also as living settings of faith expressed through processions, liturgical celebrations and popular traditions.
Whether you are a believer or simply drawn to art and history, exploring León’s religious side means delving into centuries of spirituality, culture and devotion.

The Cathedral of León: the Pulchra Leonina
The Cathedral of Santa María de León, known as the Pulchra Leonina, is the Gothic jewel of the city and one of the most impressive churches in Europe. Built between the 13th and 15th centuries on top of an earlier Romanesque basilica, it follows the French Gothic style, with a light structure that allows the interior to be flooded with light through more than 1,800 m² of medieval stained glass.
The cathedral is not just a monument—it remains the epicentre of León’s liturgical life. Daily Masses are celebrated here, as well as major solemnities such as Holy Week, Christmas and Corpus Christi, along with organ concerts that make the most of the temple’s superb acoustics. For pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, visiting the cathedral is a moment of reflection and prayer.
Travel tip: To experience the cathedral from within, attend a sung Mass or join a guided tour to climb the rooftops and take in panoramic views of León.
Basilica of San Isidoro: the Royal Pantheon
The Royal Collegiate Basilica of San Isidoro is another of the great treasures of Catholic León. Founded in the 11th century, it houses the Royal Pantheon, known as the “Sistine Chapel of Romanesque art” for the quality and preservation of its frescoes.
San Isidoro is also an active centre of worship, with liturgical celebrations and pastoral activities. Every 29 November, the basilica hosts events in honour of Saint Isidore, the city’s patron, and during Corpus Christi its cloister and square are filled with floral carpets and sacred music.
Fun fact: The processional monstrance of San Isidoro, in gilded silver, is one of the oldest that still takes part in processions in Spain.
Convent of the Benedictine Nuns – Las Carbajalas
Right in the centre of León, next to the Plaza Mayor, stands this convent inhabited by cloistered Benedictine nuns. Although the interior is not open to visits, its church is open for worship and offers a quiet place for prayer amid the city bustle.
The Carbajalas are known for making artisanal sweets following monastic recipes, sold through a small turnstile. They also keep alive the tradition of sung Latin liturgy and communal prayer, which the faithful can join at set times.
Sanctuary of the Virgen del Camino
Just 7 km from León, in the town of La Virgen del Camino, lies one of the most important pilgrimage centres in north-western Spain. The current sanctuary, inaugurated in 1961, is a modernist work that blends tradition and avant-garde. Its façade is crowned by an impressive sculpture of the Virgin and 13 apostles by Josep Maria Subirachs.
Inside, the sober, luminous design creates a perfect space for contemplation. The sanctuary is a key stop on the French Way of the Camino de Santiago and welcomes thousands of pilgrims throughout the year.
Travel tip: If you visit in September, you can enjoy the patronal festivities of the Virgen del Camino, with processions and cultural activities.
Monastery of San Miguel de Escalada
About 25 minutes from León, this 10th-century Mozarabic monastery is one of the finest examples of pre-Romanesque art in Spain. Founded by Cordoban monks fleeing Al-Andalus, it preserves a church with a spectacular portico of horseshoe arches.
Although no longer inhabited by monks, it remains a place of great spiritual and artistic value. Its rural setting makes it ideal for combining art, history and nature.
Monastery of Santa María de Carbajal (Carbajosa de la Sobarriba)
Less than 15 minutes from León, this small Cistercian monastery retains a special charm. Surrounded by fields and silence, it’s an ideal place to disconnect and immerse yourself in spirituality. Its Romanesque church and modest monastic quarters transport visitors to another era.
Holy Week in León: Festival of International Tourist Interest
León’s Holy Week is one of the city’s most important religious events. Declared of International Tourist Interest, it combines Castilian austerity with a profound sense of devotion.
For ten days, the brotherhoods process through the streets with floats carved by some of Spain’s finest sculptors, accompanied by drums, cornets and choirs. Standout processions include El Encuentro, La Pasión and the Santo Entierro.
The Plaza Mayor, Calle Ancha and the Cathedral are key spots to experience it. And on the morning of Good Friday, don’t miss the procession of Los Pasos, when thousands gather for one of the most moving moments of León’s liturgical calendar.
León and the Camino de Santiago
León is an essential stop on the French Way. Thousands of pilgrims pass through the city each year, finding hospitality in hostels, parishes and convents. Visiting the Cathedral, San Isidoro, Las Carbajalas and the Virgen del Camino marks a spiritual milestone on the road to Santiago.
In many parishes the pilgrim’s blessing is offered—a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages that still moves those continuing their journey to the Apostle’s tomb.
